Secondary English / IB Language and Literature

Whether you are preparing for your Os, your As, your IB Language and Literature exams, we have the right classes for you. We strive to inculcate a love for the English language by reading a variety of texts - both literary and non-literary - and by teaching specific skills which would help our students become better writers.

At The Young Writer's Table, we teach exam skills by considering excerpts from well-known short stories, newspaper articles, journals in The New Yorker, infographics, poetry; we help students become better, more informed writers, while giving them the necessary skills to excel in the examinations.

Students conceptual links between non-fiction articles and prose. For example, we will compare and contrast thematic similarities between an extract from A Visit From The Goon Squad and a non-fictional article from The New Yorker The Man Who Broke The Music Business by Stephen Witt. Students discuss contemporary issues in class and hone in on their expository essay structure for their non-fiction writing.

Students become more confident about discussing key social issues that define their generation while appreciating the way authors present these social issues in the stories they write. Students learn how visuals compliment text to present a perspective. Students learn how to compose clear and concise sentences for their Individual Orals (IB) or when answering their comprehension passages (Os / As).
